three for easter

This year there were three of you.  

Six little hands enjoyed picking up eggs.  Three baskets from the bunny were found around the house. 

Four hands enjoyed dunking eggs in dye.  Four little feet scrambled to be the first to find eggs at the church hunt.  Dozens of wildflowers were picked for the sick sisters.  One carrot, two hard-boiled eggs and a basket of empty (expected-to-be-filled) eggs were left for Mr. Bunny on the back porch.  One hand-written note was carefully written to the bunny.  Two smocked dresses and one baby in bloomers and an eyelet top were donned on Easter morning.  

It was a glorious morning, indeed!

 

EGGS -- Hard-boiled 101

If you are anything like me, each year just before Easter rolls around, you madly figure out how to hard-boil eggs so your kids can enjoy dying some for the big day.

After many attempts (failed and successful), I have found a fairly simple method that produces an all-yellow yolk (I am not a fan of the yucky colored gray ones).

This method is also suppose to make peeling the egg a bit easier too.

I am happy to say it works.  Our eggs came out perfect each time.

The excitement erupting in kids over opening a little plastic egg to find a little trinket or sweet is so adorable.  I love the way littlest things mean so much at this age!

"Egg"periments

Over the weekend we experimented with egg dying.  We ended up using the brown eggs from the refrigerator because all the stores were out of white eggs (imagine that!).  I wasn't sure how the colors would turn out with brown eggs but the kids didn't know any different so we proceeded with the brown eggs.  It was fun to see the way the kids experimented with color and dying.  Their different little personalities came out with the methods they utilized to dye.  My big girl was very exact and purposeful with her dying.  She didn't even drop a bit of dye on the table or her hands.  The little one on the other hand preferred using her hands to take the eggs in and out of the dye.  She mixed colors like crazy.  

Overall, the dye on the brown eggs turned out fine.  They looked very natural and earthy.  Next year I think it would be fun to dye eggs using natural egg dyes.  

Red - cranberries

Orange - Paprika

Yellow - Tumeric or Onion Skins

Green - Kale

Blue - Blueberries

Purple - Red White

Pink - Beets

Brown - Coffee

We'll see...by the time next year rolls around I might just forget about my lofty egg-dying aspirations and buy the 99 cent kit at the store again.
