I was so disappointed when I called the local peach orchard and heard that peach picking season was done. This spring, we missed the strawberries we pick at our usual spot out west. With a new little one in tow this year, I haven't been the best at planning and remembering to do the things we do every year. Things that have sort of become tradition around here have dreadfully fallen by the wayside. I think tradition in families is important and furnishes children with such delightful memories to carry with them.
So, when my mom said she had figs in the garden that needed picking, I was overjoyed!
The figs were warm from the afternoon sun and incredibly sweet right off the branch.
They picked until there were no more in arms reach.
Even though they were doubtful about tasting the new fruit (new to them--I don't think I have served fresh figs to them before), they both took a bite and were surprised at the sweet taste.
With all the figs ripening, I have been searching for good recipes to utilize all the fresh figs.
These preserves sound wonderful and quite simple.
Fresh fig preserve
from Yum Factor
Ingredients
10 figs
3 tbsp granulated sugar
1-2 long sticks of cinnamon broken into two
juice of one lemon
Directions
Wash the figs and then cut them in quarters
Place them in a thick bottomed pan
Sprinkle the sugar and lemon juice over it
Throw in the two pieces of cinnamon
Keep it on a low flame for about 25-30 mins
Cover it for the first 10-15 mins, but keep checking on how fast it cooks
There is no need to add water. The lemon juice and sugar work well enough for this
Once the figs start to break up, stir them a bit
If there are very large chunks of figs, break it down gently with a fork and continue cooking it till it all done and there is not much liquid remaining
Sterilize the jar that you will be storing this in
I just put the jar in a large pot of hot water and allow the water to boil for 10 mins
Take the jar out and allow it to dry it in the sun. Ensure that there is no moisture in the jar
Once the fig preserve has cooled down, transfer it to the jar
Store it in the refrigerator
I love the looks of this too. Wouldn't it make the perfect afternoon snack or appetizer?
