rain

We have had the luxury of rain lately.  My kids can't get enough of it and beg to play outside when it falls lightly from the gray sky.  Rain seems to have the same effect on them as snow....excitement, wonder, bundling up and pure joy.  I am happy to let them slosh and play in this beautiful element we so rarely see.

last night

Last night you slept with your little arms around my neck,
Your eyes hesitantly peered to the window alive with light.
We listened to the rain drain from the roof to the gutters,
and fall down to the ground below.
Each crash of tremendous thunder,
thrust your wide eyes open.
We huddled together in a cozy twin-sized bed,
waiting for the storm to pass on.
Finally your eyes closed,
and your grip around my neck loosened.

As I slipped away to my own room,
I couldn't help but remember the same stormy-night feelings from my childhood.

early February rain

We love the rain!  Especially, when it is mild enough outside to enjoy it with an umbrella, rain-boots and pajamas on an early February morning.  I love the peace it brings to everything.  The calmness on a drizzly morning with light rain falling even seems to calm rowdy children.  I do hope we get lots more!

the rain came

When the skies darkened from the west and the winds kicked up, it was like a magic signal sent out to everyone.  Doors swung open and kids ran outside while parents marveled at the sight of rain -- a sight that hasn't been seen for many, many months.   Little boats were sailed down the water-filled gutters while umbrellas were abandoned in the yard.  It was almost surreal to see the dark clouds instead of the accustomed blue.  We are so thankful the rain came down today.

rain

The skies turned dark against the setting sun and gave us a glimpse of the rain we've needed all summer.  The drops that fell were oversized and fell heavy from the dark sky.  Unfortunately, like so many times before, the rain seemed to just tease us with these infrequent drops, thunder and dramatic skies.  We are so hopeful that we might be in the rain's path soon.

Rain magic...

When light spring rains set in and all indoor opportunities are exhausted,
reach for the pint-sized umbrella to share with a friend.
Marching outside barefoot in the fresh puddles
makes a lasting impression
Forget the boots, hats and gear,
just grab an umbrella to share with a friend.

My big girl experienced this with her friend last week.
Who doesn't have fond childhood memories of walking and playing in the rain with or without an umbrella?
It is always unplanned and spontaneous making for fabulous preschooler fun!
